@FIUFootball Signs JUCO Defensive End Newton Salisbury

MIAMI (Dec. 16, 2015) – FIU Head Coach Ron Turner announced on Wednesday the addition of mid-year junior college transfer defensive end Newton Salisbury. Salisbury, a native of Collinsville, Okla., will join the Panthers in the spring.

"Newt is a guy that jumps out off the screen when you watch his tape because of his motor," Turner said. "He goes hard every play. He's a relentless pass-rusher, relentless chasing the ball and has good strength at the point of attack. I think that he is a guy that can come in here and be an impact player and help us right away."

Salisbury, a 6-foot-3 defensive end, spent the past two seasons with the Northeastern Oklahoma A&M Golden Norsemen. During his time at NEO, Salisbury totaled 27 tackles (16 solo) with five tackles for loss, three sacks and one fumble recovery. Salisbury is a graduate of Collinsville High School where he was a second-team all-state selection with the Cardinals during his senior year. That season he collected 80 tackles and eight sacks as Collinsville went 10-3 advancing to the state semifinals. He also wrestled for Collinsville helping the Cardinals to three dual state championships and three-straight state championships as a team, wrestling in the 215-pound weight class. A member of the National Honor Society, Salisbury graduated in the top 10 percent of his class.
