Payton Young's RBI single off
Michael Agis in the top of the seventh inning scored Josh Bobo with the decisive run as Jacksonville State defeated FIU 6-5 Saturday night at the FIU ballpark.
The Gamecocks (1-1) scored four runs in the seventh to rally from a three-run deficit. JSU evened the three-game series with FIU (1-1). The rubber game of the series has been moved up to 12 p.m. on Sunday.
FIU built a 4-2 lead with the help of five errors committed by JSU in the first three innings. JSU starter Colton Pate surrendered three hits and four runs (all unearned) in three innings of work.
The Panthers capped off their scoring with three consecutive singles off Corley Woods in the fifth. With two outs and no one on base,
Zack Soria,
Kenny Meimerstorf, and
JC Escarra singled. Escarra's hit drove home Soria with the fifth FIU run.
Meimerstorf was 3 for 4 and
Christian Khawam was 2 for 4 for the Panthers, who had nine hits.
JSU relievers Joe McGuire (1-0) and Justin Hoyt restored order starting in the sixth inning retiring 11 of the 13 FIU batters the pair faced. Hoyt pitched the final two innings to record the save.
Agis (0-1), who went three innings, allowed three hits and struck out five batters, took the loss for FIU.
Left-hander
Dominic LoBrutto made his first college start after being FIU's primary set-up man out of the bullpen last season. LoBrutto pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowed seven hits and two runs.
