Tyler Myrick limited Florida Atlantic to one earned run and FIU broke open a tight game with a five-run eighth inning to defeat FAU, 8-5, Saturday night at Infinity Insurance Park.
The Panthers (22-25, 11-12 Conference USA) evened the series with the Owls (31-14-1, 15-7-1 C-USA). The rubber game is Sunday at 12 p.m.
After FAU scored 11 runs in Friday's game, Myrick ruined any possible party for the Owls bats on Cinco de Mayo.
The sophomore right-hander matched his career-high in innings pitched by going 7 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits, one earned run and struck out a career-high eight batters. Myrick pitched 7 2/3 innings against Louisiana Tech last May.
Myrick opened the game retiring seven of the first eight Owls. FAU scored its first run on an FIU error in the third inning, but Myrick then set down eight of the next nine Owls.
Myrick exited the game with a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth. His teammates quickly made it 8-2 in the bottom of the eighth.
Jose Garcia led off the eighth with a line drive home run off FAU reliever Marc Stewart down the left field line.
It was Garcia's 12
th home run of the season to equal the FIU freshman home run record held by Jabari Henry, who set the mark in 2010 when he won the Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year award.
The Panthers proceeded to load the bases on walks to
Adan Fernandez and
Lorenzo Hampton, Jr., and
Christian Khawam was hit by a pitch.
Derek Cartaya's two-run single down the left field line made it 6-2, FIU.
Two batters later,
Eddie Silva slapped a two-run single to right center scoring Khawam and
Logan Allen, who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Panthers led 8-2, but the Owls made it interesting scoring three runs in the ninth inning. However, freshman
Cody Cortelli entered the game and retired three straight, including the final two batters on strikeouts looking to end the night for FAU. Cortelli earned his first collegiate save.
Silva was 3 for 5. Cartaya was 2 for 5 and Fernandez hit his seventh home run of the season – a solo shot in the second inning.
