Dazzling Pitching Performance by Pineiro Leads Baseball to Victory over Seton Hall

MIAMI - Redshirt sophomore Joel Pineiro (2-0) threw a career-high of 6.2 innings pitched as he backed the Panthers in a 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon over the Seton Hall Pirates from FIU Baseball Stadium.

Pineiro held the Pirates to one run while striking out five batters and gave up three hits. The Miami native would not allow a single hit after six innings of work before allowing the first hit on a leadoff infield single in the seventh.

The righty worked quickly in the afternoon setting down the first ten batters he faced in the Seton Hall lineup. Dating back to his start against Notre Dame last Saturday, Feb. 24, Pineiro has allowed just one earned run over 11.2 innings of work. 

FIU got on the board first as leadoff man Brylan West hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first for his third HR of the season. In the bottom half of the fifth, the Panthers tacked on a pair of runs as Andre Martinez worked an RBI groundout that scored Chase Engelhard. West chipped in with his second RBI of the afternoon with a grounder to left for a single, bringing around Alex Ulloa.

Ryne Guida added in with an insurance run in the eighth on a RBI single to left field, scoring Martinez to take a 4-1 lead into the ninth.

Orlando Hernandez got the ball after Pinerio, closing in on a 1.1 innings pitched through the eighth. Ryan Cabarcas came in earning his s second save of the season as he mowed down the Pirates bats with a pair of strikeouts to secure the Sunday win. 

West and Kishon Frett each had a pair of hits on the afternoon marking Brylan's fourth multi-hit effort of the year as Frett notched his third 2+ hit game of the early campaign.

FIU looks to even up the series in the finale on Monday, March. 4 for a 6 p.m. first pitch. It can be streamed live on ESPN+.
