AUSTIN, Texas and GAINESVILLE, Fla (March 29, 2024) - FIU track and field saw a notable day on Friday, with two athletes setting school records at two of the most prestigious meets being held around the country.

In Gainesville, junior Valerie Lastra rewrote the 1500 school record by setting a personal best of 4:21.35, placing fifth in an extremely competitive field. The 4:21 is good for 19th in the NCAA. It breaks the school record mark held by Christie Masson since 1996, set at FSU.

In the women's discus, Michaelle Valentin set the FIU #2 all-time outdoor mark and reset Haitian national record she had previously just set at UCF, throwing 58.32m in Section A of the event to place third.

"It was awesome to see a number of our athletes really excel at a high level this weekend on a big stage," said head coach Ryan Heberling. "The moment was not too big for any of them."

Christiana Ellina and Hannah Jansen put together impressive performances in the javelin, finishing in sixth and seventh, respectively. For Ellina, it was a 2.5m PR and the mark broke the U23 Cyprus national record. Ellina is now ranked 13th in the NCAA

Blake Orr nearly set a personal best, placing 15th in Section A of the javelin with a mark of 63.19m.
