MIAMI – Track and field's Michaelle Valentin and men's soccer's Eduardo Mustre were named FIU's Student-Athletes of the Year for 2023-24, as announced on Friday afternoon.
Valentin and Mustre were recognized as Student-Athletes of the Year, FIU's top internal honor. Both received conference and national recognition for their performances, including All-America honors for Valentin and All-Region honors for Mustre.
Valentin earns Female Student-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive campaign, adding more honors to her decorate career. She capped her junior campaign by earning second-team All-American honors in the hammer and discus at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 12th in both events. Valentin threw a personal best of 64.33m in the hammer and 55.37m in the discus in Eugene.
This finished a season full of notable highlights for Valentin including a gold and two silver medals at the CUSA Championships. She also had a total of six first-place finishes, school records in the hammer and weight throw, and the Haitian national record in the discus.
Mustre earns the Male Student-Athlete of the Year Award after a standout junior season in his first year donning the Blue & Gold. He recorded a team-high of 11 goals and 24 points and stared in all 19 matches, earning United Soccer Coaches All-East Region team and American Athletic All-Conference first team honors.
His 11 tallies are the most by an FIU Panther since 2018 and he scored multiple goals in games at Oregon State (8/24) and Charlotte (10/27). In addition he was named to the named to the weekly AAC Honor Roll four times throughout the duration of the regular season. Additionally, Mustre was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Top 100 Midseason List, coming in at 83rd in the time.
