IRVING, Texas (Jan. 12, 2016) – For the second-straight week, and the fourth time this season, FIU swept Conference USA weekly honors as
Kyna Pereira and
Rebecca Quesnel were named the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday.
Pereira began the weekend with an overall first-place finish in the 500 free during the Panthers' Tri-Meet with No. 19 N.C. State and No. 44 Kansas. The time of 4:56.21 was the Umkomaas, South Africa native's fourth-fastest time in the event this year for her fourth first-place finish. Pereira followed that up with a time of 16:52.70 in the 1650 free. That time was good for second overall as Pereira bested Kansas' Libby Walker by nearly 20 seconds. Her time was second only to N.C. State's Hannah Moore (16:18.41), who set an FIU pool record. A day later, Pereira took part in the FIU Relays, swimming the first legs of the 3x100, 400 Free and 400 Medley Relays. Pereira recorded a 52.94 in the 100 Free (first leg of the 400 Free) as the team placed first with a time of 3:30.37 (seventh-fasted time in C-USA this season). She posted a personal-best 1:00.45 in the 100 Back (first leg of the 3x100 Backstroke Relay). Pereira also recorded a 1:00.47 in the 100 Back (first leg of the 400 Medley Relay).
Quesnel picked up four first-place finishes, sweeping both the 1-meter and 3-meter programs during the FIU Tri-Meet (1/8) and the FIU Relays (1/9). On the year, the Burlington, Ontario, native has earned 11 first-place finishes. Her diving victories in the 1-meter (282.50) and 3-meter (280.35) in the FIU Tri-Meet helped FIU knock off No. 44 Kansas (150.50-148.50). A day later, Quesnel set a personal best in the 3-meter, scoring a 330.50. The total was the highest in Conference USA this season. With her scores this season, Quesnel has posted three of the top five scores in C-USA in the 3-meter and has posted the top five scores in the 1-meter. Quesnel has recorded scores of 280 points-or-more six times in both the 1-meter and 3-meter.
The honor marks the third C-USA weekly honor for Pereira and 10th of Quesnel's career.
The Panthers will next travel to Ft. Myers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Jan. 23. The meet is set to start at 11 a.m. ET.
