WHAT WE LOOK FOR
At FIU Cheer, we look for athletes who possess a strong combination of athleticism, passion, and commitment. Ideal candidates demonstrate an elevated level of physical fitness, flexibility, and coordination, alongside an ability to perform stunts, jumps, and tumbling with precision. We seek individuals who work well in a team environment, will be great student ambassadors showing effective communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. A positive attitude, willingness to learn, and dedication to representing the team and university are key traits we value. Whether you are experienced in cheerleading or new to the sport, our focus is on athletes who are eager to grow, bring energy to every practice, and contribute to the success of the program.

STEP 2 – REQUIRED DOCUMENTS
(These documents will be DUE on the first day of Tryouts. Please note that without these forms, you will NOT be allowed to complete the tryout process.)
1 - Headshot- current photo in your day 1 outfit
2 - Copy of your Letter of Acceptance or Proof of Enrollment for Fall of 2025 (Spring students are not eligible)
3 - Copy of the FRONT & BACK of your current Medical INSURANCE CARD.
4 - Recommendation Letter from a coach, teacher, administrator, or manager.
STEP 3 – TRYOUT FEE $35
Due on the 1st day of Tryouts. CASH ONLY.
TRYOUT PROCESS & REQUIREMENTS
The tryout process will consist of the following criteria:
FIU Fight Song
- Our college Fight Song is where choreography meets school spirit. This FIU Spirit tradition is performed at most of the major university and athletic functions, pep rallies and at all football and basketball games!
- By attending one of our PREP clinics, you'll get this material taught to you by some of our current FIU Cheerleaders.
JUMPS
- Your best single jump, plus a combination jump will be judged. (Toe Touch, R/L Hurdler or Pike)
- If you can safely tumble out of your jump, please add it to your single jump. (BHS, Tuck, or Full)
TUMBLING
Our Tumbling is primarily performed on TURF/GRASS, NON-SPRING FLOOR MATS, or on BASKETBALL COURT. Please note that the skills you are trying out with are the skills you MUST keep up with ALL season long.
- A Standing Back Handspring series (2 or 3)
- Standing Back handspring/series to Tuck/Layout/Full
- A Standing Back Tuck
- Round Off Back Handspring Back Tuck/Layout/Full
- Specialty Passes/Connected Skills into Layout or Above (FWO's, Whips, Fulls, etc.)
STUNTS
During tryouts, you will be put into stunts based on your strongest position. Once in those groups, these will be the skills required during tryouts.
- Full Up to platform or lib/body
- Switch up 360 to lib/body
- Invert to lib/body (RO, BHS, or Hand to Hand)
- Rewind to platform
Attire
Women
- Athletic shorts and fitted tank or t-shirt. (No all-star team or previous school logos)
- FIU Colors- Navy Blue & Gold- Our FIU Bookstore offers a wide selection of FIU attire
- Slicked Mid/high ponytail with BOW or Ribbon.
- Gameday/Performance READY makeup
- NO jewelry (No band aids are permitted covering piercings; they must be REMOVED)
- Please cover large tattoos
Men
- Athletic shorts and a tank top or t-shirt. (No all-star team or previous school logos)
- FIU Colors- Navy Blue & Gold- our FIU Bookstore offers a wide selection of FIU attire.
- Cheerleading or Athletic Sneakers.
- NO jewelry (No band aids are permitted covering piercings; they must be REMOVED)
- Please cover large tattoos.
- Must be Well-groomed and clean shaven.
Video tryouts will only be accepted under extreme circumstances where an individual is unable to attend an in-person tryout due to factors such as illness, unavoidable travel, or other significant reasons. These situations must be exceptional, as in-person tryouts are the preferred method for assessing candidates. Video submissions will be carefully considered but should not be seen as a routine alternative to attending the scheduled in-person tryouts.

Spirit Team Requirements
Eligibility for Cheerleaders
- Must be registered for the 2025 Fall & 2026 Spring semester.
- Undergraduate student, full time-minimum12 credits
- STEP Program
- Graduate Student- minimum 9 credits
- Students must be enrolled in classes for the Fall 2025 semester. Students accepted for the Spring 2026 semester are not eligible to tryout. We recommend you continue training, and we will see you the following season.
- Maintain at least a 2.0 GPA
- If you are an incoming freshman or transfer student, you MUST provide a letter of acceptance into the university.
- If you are current student, you MUST provide a copy of your student ID
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Please consider your availability for all listed dates prior to trying out, you must be available and present for all dates.
- Team Practices- Mondays & Wednesdays 5:00pm-9:00pm
- Additional practice times are based on events
