MIAMI (Jan. 16, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team closed out the first day of the UCF Quad Tournament, facing host-institution UCF in doubles play and Conference USA foe Rice in singles action from the UCF Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Andrea Lazaro picked up the Panthers lone victory in singles action, defeating Rice's Savannah Durkin, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. The victory was the fourth-straight for the Barcelona, Spain, native. The Owls claimed the other five matches as freshman
Maryna Veksler fell to Katherine Ip, 6-1, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), senior
Carlotta Orlando lost to Lindsey Hodge, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, junior
Nina Nagode fell to Emily Smith, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, sophomore
Nerma Caluk (No. 69) lost to Alison Ho, 6-3, 6-2, and senior
Kaitlin Brozovich fell to Solomiya Zinko, 6-4, 6-4.
In doubles play, the duo of Veksler and Nagode earned a 7-6 (5) win over UCF's Caroline Eberhart and Sofia Baptista. It marked the only doubles win for the Panthers on the day as the Knight claimed the two remaining matches (Orlando and Lazaro lost to Monica Matias, 7-5, and Caluk and Brozovich fell to Clare Mendell and Diana Dehterevich, 6-4).

Action will continue on Sunday morning beginning at 11 a.m. ET. FIU will take on North Texas in doubles play followed by singles action versus UCF.
