MIAMI (Jan. 9, 2016) – The FIU swimming and diving team used first-place finishes in each of the day's 12 events to win Saturday's FIU Relays from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
FIU (738) placed first in the seven-team field ahead of Indianapolis (658), William Jewel (532), Adelphi (292), Sacred Heart (244), Ripon College (136) and Nebraska Wesleyan (102).
The Panthers began the day winning the 3x100 fly as
Letizia Bertelli,
Jennifer Alfani and
Jennifer Deist posted a 2:54.98. FIU also claimed second in the relay with a 2:58.88 by
Marie Lauridsen,
Becky Wilde and
Anna Jonsson.
In the 3x100 back, the Panthers claimed the top two spots as
Jessica Piper,
Skye Carey and
Naomi Ruele recorded a time of 2:52.32 followed by
Kyna Pereira,
Valerie Inghels and Bertelli's time of 3:03.76.
FIU continued its dominance with a first-place finish in the 3x100 breast (
Nicole Hunnewell,
Emily Jurich and
Chase Harris – 3:21.36) and a first-place result in the 800 free (Deist, Wilde,
Oceane Peretti and
Ilaria Manzella – 7:50.74). In the 800 free, Deist set a personal best with a first-leg time of 1:56.90.
Ally Mayhew, Lauridsen, Jonsson and Piper posted a first-place time of 4:41.40 in the 500 yard (50-100-150-200). Harris, Hunnewell, Ruele and Peretti finished second in the event with a time of 4:48.00.
In the 400-yard medley, FIU took first and second as Carey, Jurich, Inghels and Alfani scored a time of 3:59.37 and Pereira, Peretti, Jonsson and Manzella notched a 4:03.47. The team of Lauridsen, Mayhew, Pereira and Ruele placed first in the 200 free (1:35.75), while Bertelli, Inghels and Deist swam at 15:55.24 in the 1500 free (first place).
In the 4x100 IM, Alfani, Carey, Piper and Wilde posted a first-place time (4:04.12), while FIU claimed the top two spots in the 400 free with times of 3:30.37 (Pereira, Bertelli, Deist, Ruele) and 3:35.89 (Lauridsen, Alfani, Wilde and Carey).
In diving,
Rebecca Quesnel swept both programs, winning the 1-meter (293.30) and the 3-meter (330.50). His score in the 3-meter was a personal best for the native of Burlington, Ontario.
The Panthers will next travel to Ft. Myers, Fla., to take on Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday, Jan. 23. The meet is set to start at 11 a.m. ET.
