FIU's Seranno Takes Second at Memphis Women's Golf Tournament

MEMPHIS (October 18, 2016) -- Senior Camila Serrano (Bogota, Columbia) turned in a 2-over par 73 and finished as the runner-up after Tuesday's final round of the Memphis Women's Intercollegiate in Tennessee. The two-day, three-round event took place at the par-71, 6,105-yard Ridgeway Country Club in Memphis.

Starting on the fourth hole in the shotgun start, Serrano bogeyed her first and birdied her fourth hole of the day (the par-5 eighth) and proceeded to par nine of her next 10 holes to stay close to par. Despite a bogey on the first hole after making a second turn, she finished her tournament with a birdie 2 on the par-3 third and finished with 73 and a total of 5-over (71-74-73  218) for second place.

"It was pretty tough today as the wind was just as hard as it was yesterday," said Serrano after the round. "With the conditions tough and the pin locations being very difficult, I think being runner up was good."

Serrano tied for the tournament lead by shooting 1-under par for the 54-hole tournament on the par-3 holes. She was also 1-under on the par-5 holes, tying for fourth in the field of 74. Her eight birdies were tied for the second-most, four behind the medalist, Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton.

FIU put a pair of golfers in a tie for 29th, as junior Katerina Krasova (Ricany, Czech Republic) and freshman Diana Velez (Dorado, Puerto Rico), both shot 19-over for the tournament. Velez (75-78-79  232) posted six birdies for the tournament, and finished sixth on the par-4 holes at 6-over and Krasova (79-76-77  232) was tied for eighth by going just 7-over on the par-4 holes for the week.

The FIU squad finished fourth out of 13 teams at the event, shooting 63-over par (304-306-305  915). The Panthers were three shots behind second-place Houston Baptist, with host Memphis winning at 43-over (895).

"The conditions and course were very tough this week," said FIU Head Coach Joe Vogel.

"We just did not handle the greens very well. We will regroup and get ready to host the Pat Bradley next week."

The Panthers will head to Sarasota to host the 39th-Annual Pat Bradley Invitational at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, a Sunday through Tuesday event.
