FIU’s Kyna Pereira and Rebecca Quesnel Named C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week

IRVING, Texas (Oct. 18, 2016) – The FIU swimming and diving swept Conference USA weekly honors as Kyna Pereira and Rebecca Quesnel were named the C-USA Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday.

Both Pereira and Quesnel helped FIU to a perfect 3-0 mark during last weekend's Dual-A-Palooza in Houston, Texas. The Panthers topped Tulane, 142-82, defeated C-USA foe Rice, 104-98, and downed Denver, 119.50-85.50, for the weekend sweep.

Pereira had a dominant weekend with six individual first-place finishes and anchored a relay team that placed first in the 400 Free. Pereira remained perfect in the distance events this season, winning a pair of 500 Free and 1000 Free events. On Friday, she took the top spots in the 500 Free (4:55.17) and the 1000 Free (10:03.66) while her 100 Free Relay team topped Tulane's swimmers with a time of 45.37. FIU went on to defeat the Green Wave, 142-80. Her 10:03.66 in the 1000 Free also sits as the conference's top time, while coming in as the 16th-fastest in the nation. The Umkomaas, South Africa, native followed the first day of action, winning three more individual events and one relay. Versus Rice, Pereira took first in the 200 Free (1:51.02) and first in the 500 Free (4:54.88). Her time in the 500 Free (4:54.88) is the top time in C-USA and the 23rd-fastest in the nation as FIU knocked off league foe Rice, 104-98. In the final session of the weekend, Pereira took the top spot in the 1000 Free (10:03.81) and claimed first in the 200 Free (1:51.52), while leading the Panthers' 400 Free Relay Team to a first-place finish with a time of 3:26.54 to defeat Denver, 119.50-85.50.

The honor marks the fifth of Pereira's FIU career.

Quesnel picked up two first-place finishes this past weekend in Houston, Texas. The native of Burlington, Ontario, scored a 276.25 in the 3-meter program on Friday as FIU swept the top three spots in the Panthers' 142-82 win over Tulane. Quesnel finished third in the 1-meter program versus Rice as FIU used the 16 diving points to propel past the Owls, 104-98. The third-year Panther finished the day with her second top finish, scoring a 273.95 in the 3-meter as FIU defeated Denver, 119.50-85.50. The 276.25 score during Friday's action was the meet high. The FIU divers took the top three spots in all three session of the meet, out-scoring the opposition, 48-6.

The award is the 12th of Quesnel's career.

FIU will next host the FIU Tri-Meet on Friday, Oct. 21. The meet is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. from the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Center.
