GAINESVILLE, Fla. (Oct. 21, 2016) – Highlighted by
Andrea Lazaro's 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 21 Caroline Brinson (Georgia), the FIU women's tennis team claimed a total of nine victories during Day Two of the 2016 ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Gainesville, Florida.
Joining Lazaro in the main draws round of 24 on Saturday are
Maryna Veksler, who defeated Georgia State's Daniela Ramirez (7-6 [4], 6-3),
Ulyana Grib, who defeated Mercer's Grace Korta (6-2, 6-0), and
Mina Markovic, who downed Mercer's Katia Stavroulaki (5-7, 6-4, 7-5). Lazaro's win improved the Barcelona, Spain, native to 5-2 and 1-1 versus nationally-ranked opponents this fall. Markovic remained perfect this season, winning her seventh-straight, while Grib improved to 6-1 with her sixth-straight victory.
In doubles action, FIU earned five victories as two teams advanced to the semifinals on Saturday. Grib and Veksler began the day defeating Miami's tandem of Yolimar Ogando and Maci Epstein, 8-5, and followed that up with an 8-1 victory over the No.57-ranked duo of Gabriella Castanada and Julia Mikulski (Florida State).
Nina Nagode and Lazaro won a pair of matches, defeating North Florida's Quetzali Vazquez and Luise Intert, 8-5, and Georgia's Eleni Christofi and Kennedy Schaffer, 8-0. Markovic and
Gabriela Ferreira topped USF's Juliana Cardoso and Jessica Cortes Chaves, 8-2, before falling to the No. 37-ranked team of Spencer Liang and Anna Danilina (Florida), 8-6.
Day-three action will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday with two rounds of singles play (main and backdraw) as well as one round of doubles competition.
