MIAMI (Oct. 28, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team was perfect in singles action during the first day of the 2016 Panther Invitational on Friday from the FIU Tennis Courts.
FIU garnered wins by junior
Mina Markovic (6-3, 6-1 versus Illinois State's Jelena Karla Vujicic), senior
Nina Nagode (6-3, 6-1 versus Stetson's Danielle Peele), sophomore
Nerma Caluk (6-1, 6-0 versus USF's Hailey Grillo) and sophomore
Gabriela Ferreira (6-1, 6-1 versus Stetson's Brittany Hill) to go 4-0 on Friday.
All seven Panthers will compete in semifinal action on Saturday in the tournament's four singles draws.
In doubles action, the duo of Lazaro and Caluk defeated USF's Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez, 6-3, to advance to the Flight Two finals. FIU's Nagode and Markovic fell to USF's Nicole Dzenga and Vanja Klaric, 6-3, while sophomore
Maryna Veksler and freshman
Ulyana Grib lost to the tandem of USF's Brooke Lashway and Florida Gulf Coast's Julianna Curtis, 6-4. Both FIU duos will square off in their flight's third-place match on Saturday.
Day two action will begin on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the FIU Tennis Courts.
