HAVE A DAY: Nick Day's RBI double lifts Gold team to capture FIU Fall World Series

Nick Day's RBI double scored Ricardo Pozo in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Gold team past the Blue, 5-4, in Game 5 and capture the FIU Blue & Gold Fall World Series Thursday night at the FIU ballpark.

With the score tied 4-4 and two outs in the fifth, Day drove the game-winning RBI double off freshman right-hander Nick MacDonald. The double, which was Day's second double of the game, hit the left center field wall. In his previous at-bat, Day hit the base of the right center field wall for a stand-up double.

For good measure, Day also recorded the win in relief of Gold starting pitcher Robert Garcia. Day escaped a jam in the final inning. With the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position and two outs, Day got Javier Valdes to ground out to shortstop Eddie Silva to clinch the series victory.

The Blue rallied from down 4-2 in the fifth to tie the score off of Day. Zach Files drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Christian Khawam had an RBI single to tie it at 4-4.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Gold first baseman C.J. Witkowski lined a two-run single to left to score Day, who doubled, and Jack Schaaf, who reached on an error.

Garcia pitched four innings, allowed four hits, two runs, one walk and struck out seven batters. Willy Fabra started for the Blue. The senior right-hander pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed four hits, three runs, one walk and struck out two.

GAME 4

Needing to win Game 4 to keep the series going, the Gold jumped out to a big lead before holding on to a 6-5 win over the Blue earlier Thursday.

Schaaf extended the Gold lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run triple to deep center. Schaaf, who was 2 for 3 with three RBI, had an RBI single to left in the third inning.

Gold starter Andrew George pitched five hitless innings and struck out eight batters. The junior left-hander picked up the win.

Irving Lopez led the Blue going 2 for 4, including a double and a run scored.
