The Blue defeated the Gold 6-0 in Game 3 of the FIU Blue & Gold Fall World Series Wednesday night at the FIU ballpark. With the triumph, the Blue moved within one win of wrapping up a series victory after taking a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five games set.
The Blue scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to put away the Gold after getting single runs in the first and third innings. Blue freshman infielder Derek Cartaya had the big hit of the fifth, a two-run bases loaded single to right field.
Irving Lopez, who walked to lead off the bottom of the first inning, came around to score the first run on an error. Lopez singled in the second inning and later scored on J.C. Escarra's RBI single to make it 2-0. Lopez scored three of the Blue's six runs.
Blue starter sophomore
Frank Chacon picked up the win after pitching five scoreless innings, while allowing two hits and striking out two batters. Junior right-hander Chandler Raiden finished the shutout giving up one hit over two innings.
Freshman Tyler Myrick started for the Gold. The right-hander pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowed four hits, one earned run, one walk and struck out three.
The Blue goes for the series clincher Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
