FIU baseball head coach
Mervyl Melendez announced on Monday the hiring of Jered Goodwin as the Panthers new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
Goodwin had previously been the head baseball coach at Hagerty High in Oviedo, Florida, from 2008-16, leading his team to a state runner-up finish last season. Goodwin's teams made two regional finals, appeared in six regionals and won four district championships.
Goodwin coached 37 players that went on to play college baseball, 22 of those players played at Division I schools. In addition, eight of his players were drafted in the Major League Baseball first year player draft, including two first round selections.
"Jered is a tremendous addition to our baseball staff," Melendez said. "His knowledge of the game of baseball will be a difference maker here at FIU. He's a hard worker and relentless recruiter, well respected by the baseball community. I'm extremely excited to welcome Jered and his wonderful family to our Panther family."
In addition to coaching Hagerty High in recent years, Goodwin was an associate scout for the Texas Rangers from 2012-16. He also was the Area Code Game coach for the Washington Nationals from 2011-2015.
Goodwin is the co-founder of the Florida Travel Baseball (FTB) travel ball organization. FTB has had more than 500 players sign letters of intent to play college baseball and had more than 200 players drafted by MLB, including 25 first round selections. Twenty of those players have gone on to play in the Majors.
FTB has also produced 40 Perfect Game All-American Game participants and 33 Under Armour All-American Game participants as well as 2 NFL draft picks.
Goodwin played high school baseball at Oviedo High where he was a 23rd round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins in 2000.
Goodwin played collegiately at Santa Fe Community College and was selected as a Junior College All-Star. He later went on to play at Birmingham Southern College and helped the school win the Division I Big South regular season conference championship.
