TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team won all five of its singles matches during the first day of the 2016 Bedford Cup from the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on Friday.
The Panthers also took three doubles matches on the day.
In singles play, sophomore
Maryna Veksler defeated UCF's Natalia Serrano, 6-4, 6-1, while junior
Nerma Caluk downed Florida Atlantic's Naiya Oden, 6-3, 6-2. Junior
Mina Markovic picked up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Florida A&M's Dominique Henry and freshman
Ulyana Grib topped Stetson's Akexe Viaud, 6-2, 6-1. Sophomore
Andrea Lazaro claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win over North Florida's Michelle Valdez for the Panthers' fifth singles win on the day. Two FIU matches were halted due to darkness and will be continued tomorrow as sophomore
Gabriela Ferreira and senior
Nina Nagode were up a set on their quarterfinal opponents.
To start the day, FIU claimed doubles victories by Lazaro and Nagode (8-2 win over UCF's Courtney Cesarini and Monica Matias), Grib and Veksler (8-2 win over UCF's Emilia Granstrom and Serrano), and Ferreira and Markovic (8-2 win over USF's Juliana Rocha Cardoso and Vanja Klaric). Caluk teamed up with FGCU's Sophia Blanno and fell to the Florida Atlantic duo of Lyndsey Boos and Kaitlyn Walker, 8-7 (4).
Action will resume on Saturday, Oct. 1, with doubles play at 9 a.m.
