Panthers Open Up Spring Season with a 6-1 Win over San Jose State

MIAMI (Jan. 24, 2017) – The FIU women's tennis team (1-0) got its spring season off to a good start with a 6-1 win over San Jose State (1-1) on Tuesday afternoon from the FIU Tennis Courts.
 
The win marked the fourth-straight, season-opening victory for the Panthers, who have won eight of their last nine dual matches, dating back to last season.
 
FIU took the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The duo of Andrea Lazaro and Nina Nagode defeated SJSU's Sybille Gauvain and Marie Klocker, 6-0, while the team of Maryna Veksler and Ulyana Grib topped Marie Dans and Gaelle Rey, 6-1.
 
Veksler extended FIU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Klocker at the No. 2 position and Lazaro made it 3-0 winning a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Gauvain at the No. 1 spot. Ulyana Grib clinched the match, defeating Rey, 6-2, 6-0. Mina Markovic (6-4, 6-4 win over Tamara Culibrk) and Gabriela Ferreira (7-6 [2], 6-3 win over Miyo Kobayashi) extended the Panther lead to 6-0 before San Jose State got on the board with the final point of the match as Nagode fell to Dans, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
 
FIU will travel to Gainesville, Florida, to face the USF Bulls on Saturday, Jan. 28, as part of the ITA Kickoff Weekend. First serve with the Bulls is slated for 2:00 p.m.
