FIU Tennis Heads to Athens for the 2017 ITA Regional Championships

MIAMI (Oct,17 2017) – The FIU women's tennis team left for Athens, Georgia, on Tuesday to prepare for the 2017 ITA Regionals Championships. The tournament, which spans Thursday through Monday, is hosted by the University of Georgia.

The Panthers played their first fall tournament at the end of September, the 2017 Bedford Cup, and have been intensely preparing since then.

"We all worked very hard and focused on the little things such as volleys and pouching in doubles," said senior Mina Markovic.

In preparation for the 2017 ITA Regional Championship, tennis Coach Katarina Petrovic and assistant coach Georgi Rumenov decided to leave an extra day early.

"It is a good thing we all entered into the main draw and left a day in advance so we will have more time to prepare and adjust to courts and conditions," said senior Nerma Caluk.

In singles, junior Maryna Veksler (seeded No. 16 in the draw) will face Georgia State's Danailova Elizabet; sophmore Ulyana Grib will play Georgia's Tech Hourigan Paige (No. 4); Caluk will face UCF's Serrano Natalia. Markovic will face North Florida's Internt Luise.

In doubles play, Veskler and Grib will face Georgia's Gonzalez Marta and Goulak Annette; Lazaro and Markovic (seeded eighth in the draw) will play against Florida's Danilina Anna and Porter Peggy.

Doubles will start off the day, beginning at 9 a.m.
