MIAMI, FLA. (Oct.20, 2017) – Sophomore
Maryna Veksler (Kiev, Ukraine) won one singles and one doubles match as part of a pair of FIU doubles wins after the first day of action Friday at the 2017 ITA Regional Championships in Athens, Georgia.
Veksler dispatched Elizabet Danailova of Georgia State, 6-4, 6-0. That followed her doubles victory in the morning session when she and sophomore
Ulyana Grib (Minsk, Belarus) beat Georgia's Marta Gonzalez and Annette Goulak 8-6.
Also in doubles, FIU seniors
Andrea Lazaro (Barcelona, Spain) and
Mina Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) won 8-6 against Florida's Peggy Porter and Anna Danilina.
The Panthers were not able to capture victories in their remaining singles contests.
Veksler fell in her second-round match a few hours after her singles victory, falling in a three-set decision to UCF's Monica Matias, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.
Markovic lost to Luise Intert of North Florida, 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, and Grib fell to Georgia Tech's Paige Hourigan 6-3, 6-3. Senior
Nerma Caluk lost to Natalia Serrano of UCF, 6-4, 6-0
The Panthers will resume play Saturday, with doubles play starting at 9 a.m., followed by the singles consolation draw.
