The Gold racked up 10 hits, including a three-run home run by freshman Adan Fernandez, to cruise past the Blue, 7-3, in Game 1 of the FIU Blue & Gold Fall Series. With a win in Game 2 on Tuesday, the Gold would win the series.
Gold sophomore right-hander
Nick MacDonald was in mid-season form going four innings, allowing just two hits, one run and struck out seven batters to record the win.
The Gold scored two runs in the first and third innings to jump to a 4-1 lead. RBI singles by
Javier Valdes, Fernandez and
Eddie Silva helped produce the runs.
The big blast came in the fourth for the Gold. Fernandez drilled a three-run home run over the left center field wall scoring Patrick O'Brien, who singled and Valdes, who doubled.
Fernandez was 2 for 3 with four RBI. Valdes was 2 for 3 with an RBI.
The Blue received its offense from freshman first baseman/pitcher Logan Allen, who was 2 for 2 with two RBI, including a bases loaded walk.
Derek Cartaya was 2 for 3 with a double for the Blue.
