FIU Teams Continue to Roll Following Wednesday Action

MIAMI (March 16, 2017) – Three teams continued to roll, following action on Wednesday as baseball, softball and women's tennis improved for a combined 47-14 this spring, including an impressive 27-3 mark during the month of March.
 
Baseball completed a two-game series sweep of Stetson with a 10-6 win on Wednesday. A six-run third highlighted the Panthers' victory and capped off a series in which FIU hit .301 (22-of-73) with 19 RBI. FIU's pitching staff earned two victories, while registering a 3.00 ERA. The Panthers struck out 21 Hatters during the series and held Stetson to a .250 team batting average. On the hill, a pair of freshmen claimed the victories for the Panthers. Nick MacDonald, who struck out six, while scattering three hits in six innings of action, earned Tuesday's win followed by Tyler Myrick, who improved to 2-0 with the win on Wednesday. Myrick, allowed just three runs on six hits, while striking out five in five and two-thirds innings of action. FIU has now won four-straight series and nine of its last 10 games. 
 
Softball picked up its ninth-straight win on Wednesday, defeating Fairfield, 10-3. At 23-6 on the year, FIU entered the week receiving a vote in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll. Dani Mowry drove in four runs to lead the Panthers to their 10th win at home this season and the team's conference-best 23rd victory on the year. During the team's nine-game winning streak, FIU has hit .355 with 10 home runs and 54 RBI. Four Panthers are hitting over .400, including Jocelin Soto, who leads the team, batting .550. Stephanie Texeira is second on the team, hitting .458 with three home runs and nine RBI. The FIU pitching staff has registered a 1.27 ERA during the winning streak, striking out 54 batters and holding the opposition to a .188 batting average. Freshman Shannon Saile, the reigning Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, has totaled a 5-0 mark and a 0.94 ERA with 35 strikeouts in six appearances during the streak.
 
Women's tennis entered the week ranked No. 24 in the latest Oracle/ITA Women's Tennis National Rankings and collected its 11th-straight win with a 4-0 shutout of Georgia Southern on Wednesday afternoon. The Panthers (13-1) are having one of the best seasons in program history. At 13-1, FIU has registered its best winning percentage (.929) through 14 matches since the 2001 season (also 13-1). The shutout of the Eagles was the eighth of the season for the Panthers and the team's third-straight. FIU's only loss on the season came against the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators back on Jan. 29. Four Panthers have recorded 15-or-more wins in singles play this season, including Andrea Lazaro, who is currently ranked No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA Women's Tennis Individual Rankings. Lazaro garnered her 16th win of the season and 10th of the spring to improve to 40-13 overall for her career and 27-2 all-time in dual matches.
