No. 24 FIU Women’s Tennis Claims 13th-Straight Win; Defeats Towson, 7-0

MIAMI (March 20, 2017) – The FIU women's tennis team (15-1) defeated the University of Towson, 7-0, for the team's 13th-straight victory and 10th home win on Monday, March 20, at FIU Tennis Courts. 
 
The Panthers, ranked No. 24 in the latest Oracle/ITA ranking, notched their 10th shutout of the season and fifth-straight.
 
The Panthers took care of business from the beginning, winning the doubles portion of the match in less than 30 minutes. The pair of Maryna Veksler and Ulyana Grib defeated Barbora Vasikova and Sophie Lesagex, 6-1.  Nina Nagode and Andrea Lazaro downed Yevgeniva Shusterman and A.J.Gomer with the same score of 6-1.

In singles play, Nagode gave FIU a 2-0 lead with a fast, 6-0, 6-0, win over Lucy Williams. With this win, Nagode registered 72nd victory of her career. Grib and Ferreira followed that by winning in straight sets. Grib defeated Vasikova, 6-1, 6-1, for the 3-0 advantage. Ferreira clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Shusterman. The No. 28th-ranked Lazaro won against Nicole Shakhnazarova, 6-2, 6-2, followed by Veksler, who brought home the sixth point by winning, 6-1, 6-2, against A.J. Gomer. Junior Nerma Caluk wrapped up the match for FIU, defeating Lucy Gloninger, 6-1 6-2. 
 
FIU will travel to Tampa, Florida, to take on USF on Friday, March 24. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m.
