Periman coaching hire 17

Women's Soccer

Nonen Adds Periman to @FIUWSoccer Staff

MIAMI (March 24, 2017) -- FIU Head Coach Sharolta Nonen announced on Friday, the addition of Brian Periman as the first staff hire to join her in mentoring the women's soccer program for the 2017 season. He spent the past three seasons with her on the East Carolina staff. At each stop on his coaching career so far, he mentored players who won numerous league accolades.

"I'm excited that Brian and I will continue to work together, as we have these past few years," said Nonen. "He has a tremendous amount of soccer knowledge and experience to bring to the FIU women's soccer program and I like the way we balance each other in the way we think. We are both passionate about soccer and understand the goals of what we are trying to do on the field and off. And his professionalism and recruiting skills along with his ability to coach both goalkeepers and field players will prove to be invaluable to the program."

While in Greenville, North Carolina, he worked with the ECU goalkeepers and his expertise paid immediate dividends during his first season of 2014. The Pirates matched the single-season program record with 11 shutouts, courtesy of excellent goalkeeping by senior Erika Lenns, who earned All-American Athletic Conference Second-Team honors with 5.5 shutouts and a 1.14 goals against average in 13 starts, while junior Saundra Baron posted five shutouts and a 0.73 goals against average in eight starts. Baron also played with the Trinidad and Tobago National Team.

"I would like to thank Sharolta Nonen for the opportunity and for her confidence in my ability to help her lead the FIU women's soccer program back into becoming a winning program," said Periman. "I enjoy working with her and I think our strengths and weaknesses balance each other, which makes us a good team. What makes us work well together is our respectful honesty for one another. We care about the team and the game and have always worked well on the same team. I am honored to be a part of FIU Athletics and I can't wait to represent the University and the women's soccer program."

Prior to his time in Greenville, he spent one year as an assistant coach at High Point University in 2013. He has also made stops as an assistant coach at both the University of Arizona (2012) and nearby at Florida Atlantic University (2011). Periman also worked for one season as a volunteer assistant coach in Tucson during the 2010 campaign.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Periman worked as the goalkeeper coach for the Arizona Olympic Development Program. His duties included preparing daily training schedules for the State ODP goalkeepers and conducting their fitness sessions.

In 2010-11, he was the goalkeeper coach for the Arizona Rush of the Women's Professional Soccer League. Periman helped guide the team to a U-23 National Championship and mentor Rush goalie, Haley Kopemeyer, to a No. 1 league ranking.

A goalkeeper for three seasons at Menlo College in Atherton, California, Periman aided the Oaks in 24 wins - 20 of which came against conference opponents. He graduated in 2010 with a degree in business management, before going on to play one season with F.C. Tucson of the National Premier League in 2011. He played with the San Jose Frogs of the United Soccer League from 2008-2011.

Prior to earning his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) "E" License in 2013, "D" License in 2014 and this year completed his "C" Licensure. Periman received his National Goalkeeper Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
