@FIUHoops Inks Willy Nunez During Spring Signing Period

Nunez averaged 20.8 points-per-game at Indian River State College as a sophomore

MIAMI (May 17, 2017) – FIU Head Men's Basketball Coach Anthony Evans announced today the signing of 6-foot-6, guard Willy Nunez from Orlando, Florida (Indian River State College/Oak Ridge High School), to a National Letter of Intent during the recent spring signing period. Nunez joins 6-foot-5, guard Josh Stamps from Chicago, Illinois (Trinity Valley C.C/Curie Metropolitan High School), who signed his NLI during the early signing period in November. The duo is expected to contribute immediately during the 2017-18 season.

"Willy is a talented offensive player with a high basketball IQ," said Evans. "He has great size and can really shoot the ball with deep range. We are excited to welcome him to the FIU family."

Nunez will enter FIU as a junior after playing his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Indian River State College (IRSC) in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he had an impressive sophomore campaign. Nunez averaged 20.8 points-per-game on the year which led the Pioneers in scoring and was third in the Florida College System Activities Association Athletics (FCSAAA) helping IRSC to a 17-12 record and an 8-7 mark in the FSCAAA. He shot 39.2 percent from the field, including 35.2 percent from behind the three-point arc, and 84.9 percent from the free throw line. Nunez scored 602 points in his final season at IRSC and 895 points in his two seasons in Fort Pierce. Known for his shooting range, Nunez netted 113 three pointers as a sophomore and accumulated a two-year total of 187 made three pointers for his career. In addition, Nunez averaged 5.5 rebounds-per-game and dished out 3.0 assists-per-outing.

For his efforts, Nunez was a First Team All-FCSAAA selection and earned Region 8 All-State honors.

As a freshman, Nunez averaged 9.8 points-per-game and grabbed 3.5 rebounds-per-outing in 30 games while shooting 37.5 percent from the field, 39.6 percent from behind the three-point arc and 84.4 percent from the free throw line.

Prior to IRSC, Nunez played his high school basketball at Oak Ridge High School in Orlando where he averaged 8.3 points-per-game.
