MIAMI (May 24, 2017) – FIU men's basketball Head Coach
Anthony Evans announced today the signing of 6-foot-5 guard Trejon Jacob from Raleigh, North Carolina (Seminole State College [Okla.]/Millbrook High School), to a National Letter of Intent (NLI) during the recent spring signing period.
Jacob joins 6-foot-4, point guard Cordell Viera from Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada (Toronto Basketball Academy), 6-foot-5, guard Isaiah Banks from Conyers, Georgia (Heritage High School), and 6-foot-6, guard Willy Nunez from Orlando, Florida (Indian River State College/Oak Ridge High School), who also signed during the spring period, and 6-foot-5, guard Josh Stamps from Chicago, Illinois (Trinity Valley C.C/Curie Metropolitan High School), who signed his NLI during the early signing period in November. The group is expected to contribute immediately during the 2017-18 season.
"To have someone of Trejon's caliber both academically and athletically, will be a tremendous plus for the Panthers' program," said Evans. "He does so many things on the floor and is a true stat-sheet-stuffer. He shoots with accuracy from the three-point line and from mid-range, and has the ability to attack the basket. He's a willing passer, rebounds from his position, and he defends at high level. Having only played one year at junior college, Trejon will have three years remaining and he has barely scratched the surface of how good he can be."
Jacob, who will be a sophomore in the fall at FIU, played just one season at Seminole State and led the Trojans in scoring and rebounding, averaging 13.9 points-per-game and 4.7 rebounds-per-contest. In addition, Jacob shot 53.9 percent from the field and 43.4 percent from behind the three-point arc. Jacob scored double figures in 20-of-25 game played, and better than 20 points on four occasions, including a career-high 30-point affair in a 69-62 win at Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa on Jan. 30, 2017. He also grabbed 10 rebounds in the same contest for the first of his four junior college double-doubles.
For his efforts, Jacob was named a National Junior College Athletic Association All-Region 2 selection.
"Trejon is a high level shooter, who has a very big upside," said Don Tuelly, head coach at Seminole State College. "The coaching staff at FIU did a great job of recruiting Trejon. Not only are they getting a good player, but a very good person."
Jacob played his scholastic basketball at Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, where he averaged 11.5 points- and 4.9 rebounds-per-game for his career in 57 games played from 2014-16. During his senior campaign, Jacob netted 13.5 points-per-outing, 5.8 steals-per-game and 2.2 steals-per-contest for the Wildcats, who were ranked as high as No. 4 in the state by MaxPreps.
