Two more FIU signees taken on Day 2 of 2017 MLB Draft

Two more players from FIU's No. 1-ranked 2017 signing class were selected Tuesday on Day 2 of the 2017 MLB Draft.

Outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez was drafted in the third round by the defending American League champion Cleveland Indians. Pitcher Wilberto Rivera was picked in the eighth round by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Rodriguez, a 17-year old Puerto Rico native, was the 102nd overall selection by the Indians. The 6-3, 180-pound switch-hitting outfielder played at the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy last season. Rodriguez was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game 2nd Team All-American.

Rivera, a 6-4, 205-pound right-hander, was the 244th overall selection by the Cardinals. Like Rodriguez, Rivera hails from Puerto Rico and also played at the Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy last season. Rivera, 18, was a 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game 1st Team All-American.

After two days of the 2017 MLB Draft, four members of the 2017 FIU signing class were selected. The Panthers' 2017 signing class is ranked No. 1 in the nation by Perfect Game.

Rodriguez and Rivera join outfielder Heliot Ramos (San Francisco Giants - first round) and catcher MJ Melendez (Kansas City Royals - second round) as FIU signees drafted thus far.

The 2017 MLB Draft concludes Wednesday at 12 p.m. with rounds 11 through 40.
