MIAMI (June 7, 2017) -- The first signing class for FIU women's soccer Head Coach
Sharolta Nonen is taking shape, starting with Angel Breedlove, Briana Gomez, Sierra Moss and Grace Wilson. Future additions will be announced at a later date.
"We're excited to have them join us. They will be here on campus for the second summer session, so they will be starting to work in the classroom," said Coach Nonen. "They will work out with the strength coaches in the morning, go to class in the afternoon and then they are left to drill on their own until fall preseason camp begins in August."
Breedlove went to nearby American Heritage School and played all four years on the soccer squad for the Patriots. They won three Florida State Championships her first three seasons there. The nearby Pembroke Pines native also played for the Sunrise Sting club team for the past four seasons, earning runner-up in the State Cup last year, and finishing second in the Region Three Championship.
Gomez is the keeper of group, hailing from nearby Miami Springs. She has played soccer and softball for the past 10 seasons, and volleyball for the previously seven seasons. She is a three-time Miami Herald All-Dade County performer in goal, earning First-Team honors in 2014 and 2016 for the Golden Hawks. She posted a 0.34 goals-against average last season, allowing just nine goals in 26 games. The Golden Hawks were district champions for the last four seasons. She also played for the Miami Springs Virginia Gardens Soccer Club Tropical Soccer Club, Pinecrest Premier Soccer Club and the Cutler Ridge Soccer Club. She wants to pursue a degree in physical therapy, with the long-term goal of opening her own rehabilitation practice.
Moss is the first of two Ohio natives in the incoming class to FIU. Coming from Cleveland, Moss attended Winton Woods for two season before finishing her prep career at Princeton High with the Vikings. Her sophomore year, the forward broke the Winton Woods record with 23 goals and earned team MVP honors. She was First-Team All-GMC both years at Princeton, earning Offensive MVP as a junior and MVP as a senior. She earned the Superintendent's Cup and Academic Award by maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average as a senior. Moss also played for the Cincinnati United Premier for nearly three seasons.
Wilson is a forward from Maineville, Ohio, coming to South Florida from Mount Notre Dame High in Reading, Ohio. She was a four-year letterwinner named the team's best defensive player. Her Cougars were the GGCL and regional champions the past two seasons. She volunteered with Night for the Fight cancer awareness project, serving kids with disabilities at Cincy TOPSoccer and Linden Grove School.
These four join the 18 returning players on the 2017 edition of the Panthers, with a new coaching staff and resurfaced grass pitch. More signees will be added this summer. FIU preseason camp begins in August and the 33
rd season of Division I soccer at FIU starts in late August.
