MIAMI (August 28, 2017) – After winning the Wolstein Classic in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend, FIU swept the first Conference USA Players of the Week, the league announced on Monday. Junior
Santiago Patino (Orlando, Florida / Freedom) scored twice to take C-USA Player of the Week honors, while junior transfer
Hugo Fauroux (Cannes, France) earned Defensive Player of the Week. The honor is the second for Patino and first for Fauroux.
The Panthers tied James Madison 1-1 on Friday before defeating host Ohio State on Sunday 3-0 to start the season 1-0-1.
Patino, the Preseason C-USA Offensive Player of the Year, scored FIU's lone goal, a go-ahead strike in the first minute of the second half, in the JMU draw. On Sunday, he collected the rebound of a save attempt and pushed in the go-ahead and game-winning goal in the seventh minute to take out the host Buckeyes. He was named the Tournament MVP of the Wolstein Classic for his two-goal weekend.
Fauroux tallied six saves in the JMU game, allowing just the tying goal in his FIU debut Friday. Sunday, he procured the first clean sheet of his FIU career, having to make just one save. He was also named to the Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Panthers will host a pair of home contests to open up the FIU Soccer Stadium. Friday, FIU takes on New Jersey Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. before finishing the weekend against College of Charleston at 1 p.m. Sunday.
