TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2016) – The FIU women's tennis team won four out of six singles matches and won all three doubles during the first day of the 2017 Bedford Cup from the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on Friday, September 29.
In singles play, senior
Mina Markovic downed Laura Falceto (FGCU) with a 6-2, 6-1 win and sophomore
Ulyana Grib topped North Florida's Eva Nykos,6-1, 6-0.
Senior
Nerma Caluk defeated Kristen Thoms 6-2, 6-4 and junior
Gabriela Ferreira claimed the fourth singles win against FAMU'S Sophia Osabauhen 6-1, 6-3.
Only junior
Maryna Veksler and freshman
Ioana Minca came up short in singles play during day one.
Veskler lost against Miami's Estela Perez Somarriba, 6-0 6-2, while Minca lost against Florida Gulf's Bridget Foster 7-5, 6-2.
To start the day, FIU claimed doubles victories by Grib and Markovic (6-2 win over USF's Jessica Cortes and Evelyn Tiron), Veksler and Minca (6-4 win over FGCU's Julia Ascua and Madison Gallegos) and Ferreira and Caluk (6-2 win over Stetson's Danielle Peele and Alexe Viaud).
Action will resume on Saturday, September 30, with doubles play starting at 9 a.m.
