FIU Women’s Tennis Hosts Kansas State in Home Opener on Sunday

MIAMI (Jan.19, 2018) – The FIU women's tennis team hosts Kansas State on Sunday Jan.21, in the Panthers' home opener. First serve is set for 1 p.m. from the FIU tennis courts.
  
FIU is led by senior Andrea Lazaro, who is currently third in the nation by the Oracle ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings. During the fall campaign, Lazaro made FIU Tennis history, winning the National Fall Championships in Palm Desert, California. The native of Barcelona, Spain, also reached the second round at the ITA Oracle Masters and the semifinals at the ITA All-American Championships recording a mark of 12-3 in singles action.
 
FIU duo of junior Maryna Veksler and sophomore Ulyana Grib, come into the 2018 spring season as the first FIU doubles tandem ranked as high as No.15 in the Oracle/ITA Women's National Doubles Rankings. They recorded a 7-2 record in the fall.
 
Last season under head coach Katarina Petrovic, the Panthers won 21 dual matches and set a school record of 19 straight wins and 15 shutouts. Also, FIU tennis advanced for the second consecutive year to the finals of the Conference USA Championship and finished the year ranked No. 41 in the final Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
 
Last season, Lazaro was named the C-USA Player of the Year while another five panthers received all-conference honors.
