MIAMI (Jan. 21, 2018) – The FIU women's tennis team (1-0) got its spring season off to a
good start with a 4-3 win over Kansas State (1-1)
on Sunday afternoon at the FIU Tennis Courts.
The win marked the fifth-straight, season-opening victory for the Panthers, who had a 21-2 record last spring in dual matches.
FIU opened the match taking the doubles point for a 1-0 lead. The duo of
Andrea Lazaro and
Nerma Caluk at No.3 position defeated Kansas State's Rosanna Maffei and Carolina Lewis 6-4, while the No. 1 team of
Maryna Veksler and
Ulyana Grib topped the Wildcats' Margot Decker and Carolina Costamagna, 6-2.
Lazaro extended FIU's lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over K-State's Decker at the No. 1 position and Veksler made it 3-0 for the Panthers winning a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Costamagna at the No. 2 spot. Freshman
Sandra Bozinovic clinched the match for the Panthers, defeating Lewis, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1.
Mina Markovic lost 6-2, 6-1 against Maria Linares and
Ulyana Grib lost to K-State's Rosanna Maffei 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. The Wildcats got the final point of the match as Caluk fell to Ines Mesquita, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
FIU will travel to Lubbock, Texas, to face Wichita State on Friday, Jan. 26. First serve is set for
2 p.m.
