@FIUSwimDive Set Records Again on Day 1 of 2018 C-USA Championships

ATLANTA (Feb. 21, 2018) – Setting school records in both the 200 Medley and 800 Free Relays for the second straight year, the FIU swimming and diving team completed the first day of the 2018 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships with a 12-point lead, sitting atop the leader board from the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on Wednesday.

FIU earned 40 points right off the bat winning the 200 Medley Relay. The team of junior Naomi Ruele, freshman Sara Gyertyanffy, senior Letizia Bertelli and senior Ally Mayhew took first place with a school-record time of 1:37.84. Ruele and Bertelli were part of the 200 Medley Relay team that set the school record at the 2017 C-USA Championships with a time of 1:38.18. Carita Luukkanen and Jennifer Deisi were also part of that record.

FIU's second school record came in the 800 Free Relay. The team of senior Skye Carey, senior Kyna Pereira, sophomore Berta Triola and sophomore Megan Bowen took first place with a time of 7:08.64, nearly five seconds faster than second place Rice. All four repeated as champions and bested the record they set a season ago at the C-USA Championships when they swam 7:09.02, nearly four seconds faster than the school record set in 2013 (7:12.70).

FIU will enter day two of the championships leading Rice, 80-68.

The Panthers return to the pool for day two action on Thursday with prelims of the 500 Free, 200 IM, 50 Free and 3-meter dive beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Finals are slated to begin at 6 p.m.
