@FIUSwimDive Extend Lead on Day 2 of C-USA Championships
ATLANTA – FIU won three more events and posted another school record time as the Panthers extended their lead on the second day of the 2018 Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center on Thursday. FIU won gold medals in the 50 Free, 200 Free Relay and 3-meter Diving and scored 278 points to take a 358-235 lead over second place Rice.
FIU opened up the evening with third and fourth place finishes in the 500 Free. Senior
Kyna Pereira won bronze as she posted her best time of the season with a 4:50.02 in the pool. Junior Oeane Peretti followed her with a time of 4:50.22. Those were the two fastest times this season by the Panthers in the event.

Letizia Bertelli and senior
Ally Mayhew went 1-2-3 in the 50 Free. Ruele won her second C-USA championship in three years in the 50 Free as she set a new FIU school record with a time of 22.11 in the event. Ruele was a C-USA champion in the event in 2016. That time put her on the NCAA Invite list for the NCAA Championships. As to date, it ranks No. 20 in the NCAA thus far this season as the top 40 times qualify for NCAA's. Bertelli's time of 22.63 was the fourth fastest time in school history and was a NCAA B qualifying mark. Mayhew's time of 22.81 was the fifth fastest time in FIU history which too earned her a NCAA B qualifying mark.
In 3-Meter Diving, the Panthers swept gold, silver and bronze as well as the fourth and fifth place spots. Freshman
Rachel Foord placed first with a season-best score 328.45. Defending C-USA champion
Becca Quesnel earned silver with a score of 305.55. Sophomore
Brittany Haskell (284.05) was third followed by senior
Laura Coronado (282.65) and sophomore
Brooke Bouchard (277.15).
FIU wrapped up the second day of competition with a first-place finish in the 200 Free Relay with the team of Ruele, Bertelli, Mayhew and freshman
Sara Gyertyanffy. Bertelli and Ruele won gold for the second straight year as members of the 200 Free Relay.
After two days of action, FIU has won five of the seven total events.
Day three of this year's championships take place on Friday, Feb. 23, beginning at 10:30 a.m. with the prelims of the 400 IM, 100 Fly, 200 Free, 100 Breast, 100 Back and 1-Meter Diving Program.
