MIAMI (March 16, 2018) – The No. 38 FIU women's tennis team (8-1) defeated Columbia (6-5), 4-2, for the team's seventh-straight victory and third home win on Wednesday, March 15, at FIU Tennis Courts.
The Panthers, ranked No. 38 in the latest Oracle/ITA ranking, took care of business from the beginning, winning the doubles portion of the match. The pair of
Andrea Lazaro and
Nerma Caluk, won their ninth consecutive match at the third position and defeated Columbia's Renee Ree and Sarah Hu, 6-1. The tandem of
Maryna Veksler and Uklyana Grib, lost against Adi Milstein and Christie Wan, 6-4.
Mina Markovic and
Sandra Bozinovic clinched the point and downed Jennifer Kerr and Andrea Kevakian, 7-6, taking the first point of the day.
In singles play, Lazaro gave FIU a 2-0 lead with a fast, 6-1, 6-2, win over Christie Wan. Grib defeated Hu, 7-5, 6-2 reaching her 12
th victory and the sixth in dual matches. Senior
Nerma Caluk clinched the match for FIU, defeating Sarah Rahman 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Markovic lost against Ali Pollack 6-1, 7-5 and
Sandra Bozinovic fell to Andrea Kevakian 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 after a tough match. Veksler at position No.2, did not complete her match.
FIU will play next against Marquette on
Saturday, March 17 at the FIU Tennis Courts. First serve is set for
1 p.m.
