IRVING, Texas (April 18, 208) – The FIU women's tennis team has earned the No. 1 seed in 2018 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships, beginning Thursday, April 19, in Norfolk, Virginia. Old Dominion will host the event at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
After winning the last four matches of the season and earning the No. 37 spot in the last Oracle/ITA rankings announcement, the Panthers have earned a first-round bye. FIU will face Charlotte, who defeated Southern Miss on Thursday, 4-2. The match between the Panthers and the 49ers is set for 10 a.m. ET on Friday, April 20.
FIU enters the championship, with a record of 14-2 overall and is undefeated in both C-USA matches (6-0) and home matches (7-0).
Andrea Lazaro leads the team with an overall record of 23-5. The native of Barcelona, Spain has recorded a 11-2 mark at the No. 1 position this spring. She is currently ranked at No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA national singles rankings. Sophomore
Ulyana Grib and junior
Maryna Veksler won 16 and 14 singles matches respectively. Pairing together in doubles action during this season, they recorded a 15-5 record overall and hold the No. 7 position in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings.
FIU advanced to the C-USA Championship's final for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017, falling both times to Rice, 4-1.
