The Basics
The FIU men's and women's track and field teams closed out the 2018 Conference USA Championships on Sunday, at Rice University's Wendel D. Ley Track in Houston, Texas, with the women's team posting a fifth-place finish with 65 points, its best since the 2014 championship when it took fourth (66.5 points). Â

Women's Highlights

Asha James (Canaan, Tobago) highlighted the day for the Panthers with a second-place finish in the javelin. James recorded a throw of 47.34m which was a new personal best, surpassing her previous mark of 45.07m at the Florida Relays in Gainesville in March. James, a former soccer players for the Panthers, was just one member of FIU's javelin corps that had impressive performances on Sunday, placing three competitors, in all, in the top five, and four in the top 15.
Dina Cosic (Belgrade, Serbia) logged a throw of 41.34m, and
Jasmine Banks (North Port, Florida/North Port) recorded a throw of 38.42m, rounding out the finishers in the top 10.
Samantha Ebanks (Miami, Florida/Ferguson) finished in the top 15 with a throw of 32.53m. Â

Jada Roberson (Tampa, Florida/Hillsborough) finished in the top 10 in the 100m with a time of 11.80.

Sherilene Gelderblom (Middelburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa) logged a top 15 finish in the 5,000m with a time of 17:58.41.

Men's Highlights
- On the men's side, three competitors placed in the top 10, highlighted by
Christian Williams (Hialeah, Florida/American) recording a mark of 2.04m in the high jump.
Andrew Samuels (Brampton, Canada) logged a top 15 height in the high jump with a mark of 1.89m.

- Rounding out FIU's top 10 finishers were
Luares Tavares (Taunton, Massachusetts) with a distance of 14.41m in the triple jump, and
Allen Wiggins (Orlando, Florida/The First Academy) in the shot put with a mark of 15.41m.

FIU will now wait to see which student-athletes will qualify for the NCAA East Regional, being held at the University of South Florida in Tampa, May 24-26.
