FIU opens C-USA Championship against FAU Wednesday morning

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI – FIU and Florida Atlantic renew their rivalry when the teams open the 2018 Conference USA Championship on Wednesday morning at MGM Park in Biloxi, Miss.

First pitch for the Panthers (26-26) and Owls (36-15-1) is at 10 a.m. EDT. The game can be seen on ESPN3.

PITCHING PROBABLES

FIU RHP Andres Nunez (6-2, 3.53 ERA) vs. FAU LHP Jake Miednik (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

FIU and FAU split the two games they played earlier this season in Miami. The Owls won the first contest, 11-4, and the Panthers won the last meeting, 8-5. FAU leads the all-time series, 63-49.

FIU enters the C-USA Championship as the No. 6 seed while FAU is the No. 3. The other two teams in FIU and FAU's bracket include No. 2 Louisiana Tech and No. 7 Rice, who play each other at 1:30 p.m. EDT Thursday.

The other bracket in the C-USA Championship includes No. 1 Southern Miss, No. 4 Charlotte, No. 5 UTSA and No. 8 UAB.

The Panthers split two games with Rice to finish the regular season. The Owls won two games against WKU to end the regular season. Both FIU and FAU enter the conference tournament on a roll each having won five of their last six games.

FIU and FAU finished one-two in home runs in C-USA. The Panthers led the league with 67 long balls while the Owls hit 66.

Should FIU win Wednesday, the Panthers would play at 5 p.m. EDT against the winner of LA Tech and Rice. The loser between FIU and FAU plays an elimination game Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT.
