Five FIU Players Named to All-Conference USA Teams

Conference USA named five FIU players to its All-Conference USA teams on Tuesday afternoon.

Second baseman Eddie Silva was named to the All-C-USA First Team. Third baseman Austin Shenton, pitcher Andres Nunez and pitcher/first baseman Logan Allen were named to the Second Team.

Catcher Jose Garcia and Allen were selected for the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

The five all-conference selections equal the most for an FIU team since the 2009 team had five Panthers picked for All-Sun Belt Conference. The 2001 FIU team had six All-Sun Belt Conference selections. The 2001 Panthers are the only FIU team to have played in an NCAA Super Regional.

Silva, who was nominated for Conference USA Player of the Year, is enjoying a career season. The redshirt junior returned from Tommy John surgery to hit .315 with a career-high 15 home runs and 45 RBI. Silva has nearly quadrupled his career home run output at FIU. He had four career homers before this season.

Silva is slugging .678, which is second in C-USA to Southern Miss's Luke Reynolds's .749. Earlier this season, Silva won Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Week award as well as Conference USA Hitter of the Week after hitting .600 with four home runs and 12 RBI (Apr. 23-29).

Shenton transferred from Bellevue College in Bellingham, Washington to lead FIU in hitting at .348 with nine home runs and 27 RBI mainly out of the leadoff or No. 2 spot in the batting order.

Shenton leads FIU with 47 runs scored, 71 hits, 11 doubles, and 109 total bases. The sophomore has slugged .534 and has a .422 on-base percentage.

Nunez posted a career-best 6-2 record and a 3.53 ERA after missing all of the 2017 season after tearing his right lat muscle in the 2016 season finale against Southern Miss.

After starting the season out of the bullpen to ease his way back from injury, Nunez has pitched 66 1/3 innings, allowed 26 earned runs, walked 20 and struck out 74.

Nunez earned Conference USA Pitcher of the Week (Apr. 23) after tossing seven innings, allowing no earned runs and striking out a career-high nine against UTSA. The junior had a stretch this season where he went 4-0 after pitching 32 innings, allowing just 3 earned runs, and striking out 33. FIU was 5-0 in those games Nunez pitched.

Allen was named to two teams as a utility player because of his prowess both on the mound and in the batter's box.

Allen is 5-5 with a 4.00 ERA and 81 strikeouts, which is sixth in C-USA. Allen is second on the FIU freshman strikeouts list. The left-hander is 11 strikeouts shy of tying the FIU freshman record held by former Panthers right-hander Derek DeCarlo (92 Ks in 2002).

Allen has pitched 72 innings, allowed 32 earned runs, and just 15 walks to go with his 81 punchouts.

Allen is hitting .308 with two home runs and 16 RBI. He hit a pinch-hit solo home run to defeat UTSA (Apr. 18) 2-1 in San Antonio.

Garcia, who took home the Conference USA Freshman of the Year award, also was recognized with Allen on the C-USA All-Freshman Team.

Garcia broke the FIU freshman home run record with 13 long balls in his debut season. Garcia surpassed former FIU slugger Jabari Henry, who hit 12 home runs in 2010.

Garcia is hitting .271 with 13 home runs and 38 RBI on the season. Garcia is tied for fifth in C-USA in home runs, trailing his teammate Silva, who leads the league with 15 home runs. Garcia is slugging .571, which is seventh in the conference.
