WINSTON-SALEM, NC. (May, 23 2018) – FIU senior
Andrea Lazaro defeated No.40 Melissa Lord from Stanford, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Championship
on Wednesday afternoon.
Lazaro, currently ranked at No.13 in the latest Oracle/ITA National singles rankings, won her 28
th singles match of the season and is the first Panther in FIU history to advance to the NCAA second round in the individual draw. In the second round
on Thursday, she will play against Duke's Meible Chi. Chi came out victorious in her first round match, winning 6-3, 6-4 against Oklahoma's Lily Miryazaki.
In doubles play,
Ulyana Grib and
Maryna Veksler, currently ranked at No. 23 in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings will face No. 29 Jessica Golovin and Eden Richardson from LSU. The FIU tandem has a 18-6 mark while the LSU duo recorded a 14-8 mark overall during the 2017-18 season.
