Lazaro Makes NCAA Women's Tennis Round of 16; Grib, Veksler finish season 18-7

WINSTON-SALEM, NC. (May, 24 2018) – FIU senior Andrea Lazaro downed No. 55 Meible Chi of Duke, 6-3, 6-3, in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Championship and advanced to the Round of 16 on Thursday afternoon.

Lazaro improved her record to 29 wins on the season and made FIU tennis history again, advancing for the first time to the NCAA Sweet 16 as an individual. On Friday, she will play against Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba. Somarriba came out victorious in her second round match, winning 7-6, 6-3 against Oklahoma's Megan McCray.

"Compared to yesterday, I really think that today I was able to find my game," Lazaro said after her match. "I also feel more confident than the first match and I will always be better."

In doubles play, Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler, currently ranked at No. 23 in the Oracle/ITA national doubles rankings, fell to No. 29 LSU's Jessica Golovin and Eden Richardson, 6-4, 6-3. The FIU tandem ended the season with an 18-7 mark.
