2018 NCAA East Regional Preliminaries

The Basics
The women's discus took center stage for FIU on Friday afternoon during day two of the NCAA East Region Preliminaries at the University of South Florida Track & Field Stadium in Tampa. Two of the Panthers' student-athletes – Gabrielle Rains (Sherwood Park, Alberta) and Terrisa Russell (Fort Lauderdale, Florida/South Broward) – hit the circle looking to advance to the NCAA Championships at the University of Oregon's historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, June 6-9. The top 12 in each event move on the NCAA Championships.
 
Friday was the first of two events that Russell will compete in over the next two days. She will also take part in the hammer throw on Saturday at 8:45 a.m. in the first event of the final day.

Day Two Highlights
- Both Russell and Rains competed in the second of three flights in the discus on Friday, with both of them finding themselves in the top 12 though the second flight. Russell recorded a top throw of 50.81m which put her in fifth after two groups, while Rains posted a mark of 50.36m for eighth.
 
Unfortunately, for the duo, they could not hold their positions as the third flight competitors took the circle, following over a two-hour weather delay. The tandem dropped out of the top 12. In the end, Russell missed the qualifying cut by just .11m.
 
Up Next
Russell will return to action on Saturday, May 26, on the final day of competition, to take part in the women's hammer throw at 8:45 a.m.
