WINSTON-SALEM, NC. (May, 25 2018) – FIU senior
Andrea Lazaro defeated No. 3-ranked Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 in the Round of 16 of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Championship on Friday afternoon.
With this victory, Lazaro becomes the first Panther in FIU history to reach the NCAA Individual quarterfinals and defeated the highest ranked-player (No. 3 in the nation) this season. Lazaro is currently ranked at No. 13 in the Oracle/ITA National singles rankings and won her 30th match of the season.
On Saturday, she will play Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey in the quarterfinal round. Lahey came out victorious in her previous round, winning 7-5, 6-3 against UCLA's Ena Shibahara.
" She was a tough opponent but I played my game," Lazaro said after her match. "Even though I lost the second set, I stayed calm and positive. This gave me the win."
