Lazaro Ends Memorable Season, Falls in NCAA Women's Tennis Quarterfinals

WINSTON-SALEM, NC. (May, 26 2018) – FIU senior Andrea Lazaro fell in three sets to Pepperdine's Ashley Lahey, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Division I Women's Championship Saturday afternoon.

Lazaro, who ranked at No.13 in the Oracle/ITA national singles rankings, became the first Panther to advance to the NCAA Individual Quarterfinals in FIU history. After dropping the first set, 7-5, she rallied for a 7-5 victory to even the match. With Lahey ahead 3-0, the match was moved indoors due to inclement weather. Lahey prevailed 6-3.

Lazaro finished the season, 30-5 overall - the best mark for an individual player at FIU. She earned First Team All-CUSA honors for the second straight season. Lazaro won the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championship.

"This was an amazing college career for Andrea and her success at FIU," FIU head women's tennis coach Katarina Petrovic said. "She came up short today after a tough fight. Andrea broke all FIU tennis records and she will be dearly missed."
