Logan Allen & Jose Garcia selected as Perfect Game/Rawlings Freshman All-Americans

FIU freshmen Logan Allen and Jose Garcia added more postseason accolades to their resumes on Thursday morning when each was named a Perfect Game/Rawlings Freshman All-American.

Allen and Garcia each have now been honored four times for their outstanding freshman seasons.

The two FIU freshmen were named to the NCBWA Freshman All-American team. Allen and Garcia were selected Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and both were also picked to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team last month. In addition, Garcia was tabbed C-USA Freshman of the Year last month.

Allen made the Perfect Game/Rawlings Freshman All-American First Team as a utility player.

The left-hander went 5-5 with a 3.89 ERA, which was third best on the FIU pitching staff. Allen broke the FIU freshman record for strikeouts per nine innings with a 10.34 mark surpassing David Mittauer, who averaged 10.17 strikeouts per nine innings in 1998.

Allen pitched 74 innings, allowed 74 hits, 32 earned runs, 16 walks and struck out 85 batters to lead the Panthers pitching staff. The 85 strikeouts rank second on the FIU freshman strikeouts list, second only to Derek DeCarlo, who struck out 92 in 2002.

In the batter's box, Allen hit .309 with two home runs and 16 RBI. He had five doubles among his 43 hits. Allen's first collegiate home run was as a pinch-hitter. The round tripper won the game against UTSA, 2-1, in San Antonio.

Garcia, who was named Second Team catcher, hit an FIU freshman record 13 home runs this past season surpassing the mark held by former FIU slugger Jabari Henry, who hit 12 dingers in 2010.

Garcia hit .264 with 13 home runs and 38 RBI. The right-handed hitter had 47 hits and nearly half of them were for extra bases. Garcia had eight doubles and two triples.

Garcia was third on the team in total bases with 98 and third in slugging with a .551 clip, which is second on the FIU freshman slugging percentage list to Henry, who slugged .599 in 2010. Garcia's 98 total bases are fifth all-time among FIU freshmen.
