MOBILE, Ala. (April 22, 2011) - The FIU women's tennis team began its quest for the program's fifth Sun Belt Conference title, defeating the Troy Trojans (12-14), 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Sun Belt Conference Championship in Mobile, Ala.
The Panthers (11-6) came out strong, taking the doubles point as seniors Liset Brito and Maria Spenceley made quick work of Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt, 8-2, and juniors Christine Seredni and Lisa Johnson defeated Gabriella Veiga and Lyubov Dorofeeva, 8-4.
FIU wrapped up the contest, winning three-straight singles matches to defeat the Trojans for the second time this season. Freshman Giulietta Boha earned the team's second point of the match with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Gabriella Veiga. The victory was the fourth-straight for the Wuerzburg, Germany, native and improved her 2011 record to 11-6.
Brito (No. 57) picked up FIU's third point of the match, defeating Grymel in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-2. With the win, the 2011 SBC All-Conference selection became the fifth player in Panther history to register 60 wins during their career.
The Panthers clinched the victory with Spenceley's 6-1, 6-1 win over Rosaura Ramirez-Vega. The win improved the Spenceley's record to 10-7 this spring.
The win marked the seventh victory of the year versus Sun Belt competition and moved the Panther's all-time record versus the Trojans to 7-1 (3-0 in the Sun Belt Tournament).
The victory also improved FIU to 29-8 all-time in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and a perfect 13-0 all-time in SBC quarterfinal matches.
The Panthers will take on the North Texas Mean Green in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Tournament on Saturday, April 23. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. ET.
