Panthers fall to NC State twice, 1-0, 11-3 on Day Two of Panther Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MIAMI (Feb. 9, 2013) – The FIU softball team (1-3) came up empty twice on Saturday at the 2013 Panther Invitational, 1-0 and 11-3, at the hands of NC State (3-1) at the FIU Softball Complex.

The opening matchup against the Wolfpack was a pitcher's duel between NC State's Emily Weiman (2-0) and FIU's Mariah Dawson (0-1).

Scoreless through four innings, NC State punched in the only run it would need when catcher Kirsty Grant found daylight through the left side to score pinch-runner Hayley Stowe. Stowe had come in for Hannah Sommer, who led the inning off with a single.

The Panthers were able to muster only two base hits against Weiman, who earned her second victory of the young season. Weiman tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout, fanning four batters.

Dawson took her first loss of the season, allowing six hits on one run, walking a pair and striking out five.
The Panthers stumbled out of the gate in the second game, leading to an 11-3 loss in five innings. FIU dug itself into a 6-0 hole in the first inning, jump-started by a three-run blast by Bethaney Wells.

Freshman Corinne Jenkins' (1-1) second career outing lasted just 0.1 innings and ended in a loss, yielding six earned runs, four hits and two walks.

Jenkins' counterpart, Weiman (3-0) earned her second win of the day, going five innings and allowing five hits and three runs, while fanning six batters.

FIU put three runs on the scoreboard in the second inning, courtesy of a pair of RBI singles from seniors Jessy Alfonso and Alex Casals.

The Panthers will close out the Panther Invitational in the tournament's third-place game against Georgetown at 11 a.m.
