MIAMI (Nov. 25, 2019) – In this FIU Athletics weekly recap, football highlights the week as the Panthers defeated Miami (Fla.) at Marlins Park.
Football
It was a historic night in Little Havana on Saturday as FIU downgraded the Miami Hurricanes, 30-24, at Marlins Park to become bowl-eligible for a record third-straight year.
Jose Borregales was named Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Week after going a perfect three-of-three on field goals that included a school-tying 53 yarder in the third quarter.
James Morgan tossed two touchdowns and
Anthony Jones added the game-sealing touchdown with a 37-yard scamper in the final frame. The Panthers close out the regular season on Nov. 30 with a noon kickoff at Marshall. CBS Sports Network will carry the action Saturday.
Men's Basketball
Men's basketball went 2-1 on their first prolonged road trip of the season. FIU topped Cleveland State 107-61 and Eastern Kentucky 89-70 before falling 66-63 in the final game of the Battle For the Capital Tournament.
Osasumwen Osaghae received all-tournament recognition and was named C-USA Player of the Week. Osaghae had a career-week averaging 9.3 rebounds per game while going 15-18 from the field, which included his first career three-pointer. The Miami native scored a career-best 22 points in 25 minutes in the win over EKU. The Panthers return home for a three-game homestand starting Nov. 26th against Keiser. Swimming and Diving
FIU swim and dive finished second at the Purdue Invitational this past week. Over the course of the three-day event the Panthers totaled 612.5 points. FIU was highlighted by
Rachel Foord and
Maha Gouda, after the pair grabbed first and second place respectfully in the diving portion of the event. The Panthers return to the pool on Dec. 17th as they host Nova Southeastern for the final meet of the calendar year.
Women's Basketball
In its only contest of the week, the women's basketball team fell in a nail-bitter to Bethune-Cookman by a score of 65-60.
Jiselle Thomas led all Panther scorers with 20 points. The junior guard also added six rebounds and four steals to her stat line. Basketball action returns to Ocean Bank Convocation Center on Friday as the FIU Thanksgiving Classic gets underway. The Panthers will play Oakland at 12 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29th and Northern Kentucky at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1st.
