MIAMI (April 1, 2019) – With the month of March in the rearview mirror, FIU athletics capped another busy week with six programs competing.
Below is a brief recap of how each FIU team performed this past week.
Baseball
It was a tough week on the diamond for Panthers as they dropped a pair of series to FGCU and FAU.
Logan Allen continues to shine for FIU on the mound and the plate however, as evident of his play last week. Despite being handed the loss on Friday, the sophomore pitched six innings of two earned run ball with five strikeouts. Allen proved he can swing the stick as well, after going 4-for-6 in Sunday's 15-inning marathon game and finished just a triple shy of the cycle. The Panthers hit the road for Texas this week, as FIU faces Houston in a midweek game on Wednesday before making the trip across town to take on Rice for a weekend series.
Men's Basketball
The FIU men's basketball team had its season come to a close on March 26, with a 98-68 loss at Green Bay in the second round of the
CollegeInsider.com Tournament. It was the Panthers' first postseason appearance since the 1984-95 campaign when the then Golden Panthers, the Trans America Athletic Conference Tournament Champion, faced UCLA in the NCAA Tournament. FIU finished the season with a 20-14 record, with its 20 wins marking the second most in program history. The 20 victories are also the fifth most nationally by a first-year head coach while the 20-14 (.588) record is the best by a first-year staff in the country.
Beach Volleyball
The FIU beach volleyball team posted a 3-3 record this past weekend as the Panthers hosted the seventh annual FIU Surf 'N' Turf Invitational on South Beach. On day one, the Panthers defeated No. 10 Stetson and No. 16 Grand Canyon, each by a score of 3-2, before closing out the day with a 4-1 loss to No. 4 LSU. FIU closed out play in the two-day event, on Saturday, while facing two of the top three teams in the country. The Panthers swept Tulane in the first dual of the day, 5-0, however lost to No. 3 Florida State, in a five-match thriller, 3-2, and to No. 1-ranked – and defending NCAA Champion – UCLA, 5-0. The Panthers will now head to Tallahassee to take part in the FSU Invitational, April 4-5. During the opening day, FIU will take on No. 19 Georgia State at 9 a.m. and Florida State at 1:30 p.m. The Panthers will close out the weekend against No. 15 Florida Atlantic at 9:30 a.m.
Track & Field
The FIU track and field team concluded a split weekend at the Florida and Raleigh Relays, with a number of notable performances at two of the more high-profile meets in the nation this weekend, highlighted by a second-place performance from
Clarissa Cutliff in the high jump. On Friday, Cutliff, an All-American coming off two consecutive victories to begin the outdoor season, tied for second place with WKU's Katherine Isenbarger with a jump of 1.76m. Cutliff cleared the first two heights of 1.71m and 1.76m on her first jump before the 1.81m height. FIU will be off until the Hurricane Invitational on Friday, April 12 in Coral Gables.
Softball
The Panthers dropped three at home to North Texas over the weekend, as FIU suffered the sweep to fall to 18-18 overall and 0-9 in league play. FIU heads to Boca Raton for a short road trip as the Panthers face Florida Atlantic on April 6-7 and seek their first win in the C-USA action.
Women's Tennis
The FIU women's tennis team fell to No. 21 UCF, 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. The loss snaps FIU's nine-match winning streak. With the loss, FIU fell to 10-5 on the year, while UCF improved to 18-2. In the final home match of the 2018-19 campaign FIU honored senior
Maryna Vekslers' four years of accomplishments. The Panthers travel to Houston, Texas next weekend as they face USF on Saturday, April 6 before capping the regular season against Rice on Sunday, April 7.
